Prelims & Main Exam

Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The Preliminary Examination (Prelims) is the first screening stage of the Civil Services selection process conducted by bodies like UPSC and BPSC. Its main objective is to test a candidate’s basic understanding, awareness, and aptitude.

Nature of the Exam

  • Objective type (Multiple Choice Questions)
  • Qualifying + merit-based screening
  • Only marks of General Studies Paper-I are counted for selection to Mains

The Main Examination (Mains) is the second and most decisive stage of the Civil Services selection process conducted by UPSC, BPSC, and UPPSC.

This stage evaluates a candidate’s depth of understanding, analytical ability, clarity of thought, ethical orientation, and written expression—essential qualities for administrative leadership.

Purpose of the Mains Examination

  • Test conceptual clarity and subject depth
  • Evaluate analytical and critical thinking
  • Assess answer writing skills under time pressure

Important: Unlike Prelims, Mains is not a screening test. It directly impacts the final merit list.
